What You Will Learn

This course module is presented in five sections, approximately one hour: 

    • 1.1 Introduction - Explore an overview of sustainability concepts and definitions, including:
      • Weak versus Strong Sustainability
      • Limits to Growth
      • The I=PAT Equation
      • The Tragedy of the Commons
      • Donut Economics
    • 1.2 Social issues - Understand key social issues, such as basic human needs, equity, human rights, justice, the Better Life Index, and sustainable agriculture
    • 1.3.1 Environmental issues - Understand climate change issues, such as the greenhouse effect, global warming potential, total emissions and emissions rations, ocean acidification, and rise in sea levels
    • 1.3.2 Environmental issues - Understand key environmental issues, such as decline of natural capital and water
    • 1.4 Economic issues - Understand key economic issues, such as setting economic growth priorities, sustainable economic models, and sustainable markets
    • 1.5 Conclusion - Review module 1 concepts and understand the combination of social, environmental, and economic sustainability issues

Course participants will take one quiz at the end of this module, approximately 10 questions.

Who is This Course For?

The Sustainability Core Competencies course is designed for individuals who may be new to the sustainability field but who plan to incorporate sustainability concepts directly into their work. It could also be for individuals who want third-party certification of their knowledge of sustainability via the SEA credential or those with expertise in a sector of sustainability that desire a broader industry understanding.

Course Description

This module provides an overview of sustainability and some of the most pressing social, environmental, and economic sustainability issues. The first half of this module reviews key terms and concepts; the remainder covers key social, environmental, and economic issues.

The content of this video is based on Chapter 1 of the SEA Study Guide and can be used as preparation for the SEA exam. This course is a tool to help you study for the exam, but completion of the Sustainability Core Competencies course does not guarantee passing the SEA exam. [Read disclaimer.] 

Certificate

Following the successful completion of the course, students will receive a Certificate of Completion, indicating knowledge of core sustainability concepts and best practices. 

The completion of the full Sustainability Core Competencies course earns 5 Continuing Education Units (CEU) for SEA and SEP credential holders, and the completion of this module alone earns 0.5 CEU credits.
